What makes us squeal in delight, speak motherese, and just respond so readily to overwhelming cuteness? An article that I read in the New York Times in January 2006 says that even though the human response to cuteness is rational--we respond quickly to cute cues because our young are so helpless and require our constant attention to survive--scientists are just beginning to map its source in the human brain.
